Reciprocal Reading

I learnt how to use Reciprocal Reading and keywords on 2 texts called What We Ate and What We Lost.

The first text is What We Ate.The six roles are leader, predictor, clarifier, questioner and summariser. The PDF is about what soldiers ate during the war. They ate: bully beef, jam, canned fruit and vegetables, lack of vitamin c, hard biscuits and water.

The most helpful role was the clarifier role because they identified tricky and unknown words that we don't understand through out the text.

We did reciprocal reading on a PDF called what we ate.

Next we read the second text called What We Lost. This text is talking about where soldiers fought and how many people served, were wounded, killed and injured.

They fought in Gallipoli, the Somme, Messines, Passchendaele and Bapaume.

The most helpful role in this text was the questioner role because they were asking questions about where the battle took place and how many were killed.

Introduction

An introduction tells the reader information about the topic. A hook makes people want to read your story with a suprising fact.

First we watched a video that explains what are different parts to writing an introduction. Then we wrote hooks about Mr Ogilvie.

Next we an introduction with hook about three topics. An example for the life cycle of a butterfly is Did you know that butterflies lay their eggs under a leaf or plant?  The life cycle of a butterfly takes 28 days to 32 days. Butterflies have four stages of life. They are: eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.

An other example for fireworks is Did you know that the largest ever firework display was in Thunder Over Lousiville? Fireworks use gun powder, metal salt and strontium carbonate (red firework). When they mix together it makes a loud bang.

Lastly an example for chocolate is Did you know that it takes 400 coca beans to make one pound of chocolate. There are 4 mechanisms on how chocolate are made. They are cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sugar, milk powder of alternative milk. The process can take up to eight days. depending on the species of cocoa bean.

Calendar Reading

Step 1: Get a calendar.

Step 2: Circle the date.

Step 3: Write the day.

Step 4: Write the date that is cricled.

Step 5: Write the month.

Step 6: Write the year.

Balancing

We learnt balancing by throwing different types of balls on one leg. There were five stations of PE equipment: basketballs, netballs, hockey sticks, frisbees, and rugby balls.

First I had to try and catch the frisbee while balancing on one leg without falling. I found this hard  because the wind kept on blowing the frisbee away so you had to move to the side to catch it.

For the next activity we had to dribble the basket ball and our partner had to try and catch it on one leg. I think that this activity was easy to do but when we had to dribble the ball from side to side and it was hard to stay balanced.
For the next activity we had to throw a netball back and forth between eachother while standing on one leg. I thought that this activity was easy but then it got a little bit tricky when we had to try and catch is slightly from the side I started to wobble.
For the next activity we had to throw a rugby ball back and forth between eachother while balancing on one leg. I thought this activity was the hardest because when I was throwing from the side I lost alot of balance.
For the last activity we had to hit a small ball with a hockey stink without using the stick to help you ballance. I thought this activity was hard to because you couldnt 't use the hockey stick to help you ballance.

Maori

We learnt 10 objects around the kitchen and learnt some questions.

We learnt how to say Kei hea te pene rākau? Kei hea te pene rākau means where is the pencil.

We also learnt how to say Kei raro i te tēpu? Kei raro i te tēpu means the pecil is under the table.

I thought this activity was fun because I thought it could help me with my maori in the kitchen.

Cause and Effect

We used casue and effect to help us write an explanation.

We put an explanation about the life circle of a butterfly together.

First we summarised and wrote the cause and effect sentences on the first stage - Eggs.

Next we summarised and wrote the cause and effect sentences on the second stage - Caterpillar.

After we summarised and wrote the cause and effect sentences on the third stage - Chrysalis.

Lastly we summarised and wrote the cause and effect sentences on the last stage - Butterfly.

I found this activity helpful because I learnt about the life circle of a butterfly

The Maori Pioneer Battalion | Reciprocal Reading

We used reciprocal reading to help us with text called The Maori Pioneer Battalion.

First we decided who is the leader. The leader's job is to chose the roles to the group and tell what to do.

Next we decided who is the predictor. The predictor's job is to estimate what the next piece of text.

After that we decided who is the clarifier. The Clarifier's job is identify tricky words and phrases.

Then we decided who is the questioner. The questioner's job asking questions about the text.

Lastly we decided who is the summariser. The summariser's job is to think about the main ideas in the section you read. We did keywords and reminders to help us remember the keywords we chose.

My favourite role is the leader because the leader gets to chose the roles for the group.

Cause and Effect

Cause and effect is the relationship between two things when one thing makes something else happen.

Cause is something that made it happen.

Effect is a change because of the the cause.

Casaul language is something that makes a cause and effect make sense. For example it was cold outdoors therefore they had to stay inside.

Ll: What is Cause and Effect.

Cause and effect helps build an understanding for the mechanisms we are explainaing.

Harry's War | Keywords

All text include a range of words that share information to the readers.

Keywords are words that unlocked a whole lot of information.

Keywords are used in a sentence in a specific way like keyword - dodge reminder - avoiding something you don't want to do.

Keywords can help the reader understand more in a shorter time.

Time Difference

I completed a task called times differences.

First I figured out the hour between the two times which was 4 hours.

Next I had to figure out the minutes between the two times which was 35 minutes.

Lastly I combined the two numbers and I get 4 hours and 35 minutes.

I think I need to practise some more because I was struggling on the last one.

Manners

Manners are used for showing respect to others.

Manners should be use all the time especially with an adult or teacher.

You can use manners when someone greets you or gives something to you.

Manners show the best you have to offer to others and encourage others to be their best.

Examples of manners are: thank you, please, may I and you're welcome, eye contact, and polite voice.

Manner are used to respect people and that means they should respect you.

Problem Solving

We did problem solving about time.

First we had to solve the answer.

Next we explained how we worked the answer out.

Lastly we discussed our results with Mr Ogilvie and the class.

I found this activity easy because I already know about time

Simple Machines In Real

These are the simple machines that I found in my environment.

Explanation Planner

I wrote an explanation planner about how a handball game works.

In my introduction I wrote the main points in a handball game.

Next I wrote the mechanisims about handball. A small ball is requried to bounce on the 4 or 2 squares.

Lastly I wrote down my summary. I wrote down the main points in sentences.

The structure of an explanation is TIMES.

Maori Questions

I learnt some classroom questions to help me in the classroom.

First I learnt how to say kua marama. Kua marama means do you understand?

Next I practiced kua mutu which. Kua mutu means are you finished?

Lastly I learnt the classroom questions that our teachers might ask.

I think I need to practice more saying the classroom questions because I keep making mistakes while I say the questions.

ANZAC

Balance

I learnt about balancing and how to balance on objects.

First Mr Ogilvie told us what balance is, balance is about watching out for your tipping point. Then we had to push our partner while they were standing up, looking at the ceiling and looking at their feet. This help us anticipate when to balance.

Next that we had to get to the other side of the balance beam without touching the ground or falling over. We needed to focus on how we balance and who helped us.

Lastly we had to try to balance on a soccer ball with our partners helping us or by ourselves.

I think the balancing beam activity was hard becasue there were lots of risks of falling off.

Telling Time

I completed a maths activity about time.

First I started by looking at the hour hand which is fat and short. The hour hand was on was on the number ten.

Next I looked at the minute hand which is tall and thin. The minute hand was on the number two.

Lastly I read out the time which was 10 to 10 (10:10).

I found this activity helpful because it tought me lots of things about the clock and how to tell the time.
