Problem Solving

I completed a task called problem solving. We were split into four different groups and solved a problem using place value, rounding and compensating and written algorithm.

The problem we solved was: A farm received a total of 119 millimetres of rain over a 2 month period. If 48 millimetres of rain fell on the farm in June, how many millimetres of rain fell on the farm in month 2?

First we used place value to solve the problem. first we do the ones:

119 - 48 = ??
Ones - 9 - 8 = 1

Tens - 10 - 40 is not possible so we have to add the hundred to the ten.

110 - 40 = 70.

Last step is to combine the two answers. 70+1, So 71 millimetres fell on the farm on the second month.

It was hard because I was confused when we couldn't add in the tens columm.

Next I found information for my  reasons. The first reason is Racism is hurting innocent people.  The second reason is  People are getting accused of something they didn’t do.

My last 3 reasons are: People are getting depressed and getting racial trauma because of the hate they are receiving, People are getting bullied because of their race, and Racism is affecting people’s life and what they are feeling.

The experience was amazing because I learnt new things about racism and how it affects people.

Pointless, Painful, Physical Education

I used Synthesis template and QAR template to help me read a persuasive text called Pointless, Painful, Physical Education. Persuasive is to change someone's belief.

First I made Synthesis egg template where I wrote my prior knowlegde, my new information, and my new understanding. Prior knowledge is somthing you already know, new information is something new that you learnt, and new understanding is something you know understand now.

Afterwards I answered questions and separated into boxes. The boxes are: On my own, Think and search, Author and me, and Right there.

  •  Right there means you can point it in the text.
  • Think and Search  means the answer is in the book but you have to look in different places to find the answer.
  • Author and me means the answer is no in the text but you use your backround knowledge.
  • On my own means the answer is not in the text but you could come up with your own answers.

Brainstorming

We brainstormed ideas so we can write a speech.

First we watched 2 videos about persuasive writing. Next we made a table to write our ideas about 3 topics which are Personal, Church, and World.

Later we sat down on the mat to share our ideas in 3 columns. The columns are personal, church, and world.

Lastly we we hihglighted the ideas with the colours green if you can persuade someone, red if think it going to be a problem, and yellow if it a good idea but can not persuade a lot of people.

The experience was amazing because I learned more about persuasive writing.

Skip Counting and Repeated Addition

Repeating addition and skip counting are strategies for multiplication and divison.

Repeating Addition is repeating a certain number to get an answer for a problem. For example Mike was at the beach for five days he collected 14 sea shells every day to keep how many shells does he have in total?
14 +14 +14 +14 +14 =70 the answer is 70 because 14 is added 5 times.

Skip counting is counting up or counting down using the same number.
For example Sam has seven, 5 doller notes how much money deos he have all together?.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. The answer is 35 dollars because if you skip counted in fives 7 times the answer is 35.

This activity was helpful because I learnt new strategies.

Next we made slides to write the similarities and differences about the Olympics and our school ( Panmure Bridge).

To finish up we made a logo that represents ourselves.

The experience was amazing because I learned lots of new things about the olympics.

Statistics

In groups  we learning about statistical investigation.

First we posed a question which was What is the month with the most and least blog posts? We checked our blogs to see how many blog posts we had in each month.

Next we drew a data table that has all the information. January has 12 blog posts, February has 16 blog posts, March 90 blog posts, April has 53 blog posts, May has 128 blog posts, June has 80 blog posts, and July has 30 blog posts.

To finish up made a bar graph and a pie chart. After that we wrote 3 statements about the information. The statements are January is the lowest because we had school holidays. May, June, and March are the most because we were at school for a whole month with no interruptions. July is also the lowest because we only had 2 weeks of school

The experience was amazing because I learnt new things about statistics

Water Safety

LS1 and I went to the pools to learn about water safety.

First our instructor taught us how to get in any pool safely. To get into the pool safely, I must put both of my hands on the wall, turn around and get inside of the pool.

Next our instructor taught us about back sculling. Sculling is for floating down in rivers. To scull I must lift my feet above the water and put my hands infront of me to keep me safe.

To finish up our instructor taught us front sculling. To scull forwards I must keep my head above the water and push with my hands.

The experience was amazing because I can use these skills in case I am in danger.  I think I need to practice my sculling because most of the time I kept on standing and using the wall.

Addtion and Subtraction

Addition and Subtraction can be solved by using strategies: counting on/back, rounding and compensating.

Counting on is adding forward using fingers, when the number added is under ten. Counting back subtracting using fingers, when the number subtracted is under ten.

Rounding and compensating is rounding the added or subtracted number to the nearest tidy number, then compensating for the rounding. Compensating is done by spliting the new number into the old number and the left over.

Counting on/back and rounding and compensating are easy strategies to use for addition and subtraction, when the numbers get too big to be solve with basic facts.

Duffy Theatre

The whole school and I watched the Duffy Show.

First they sang songs and introduced each other. There were three actors and they played different roles.  Their roles were Duffy, Duffy's mum, Duffy's sister, Duffy's aunty, and Duffy's teacher.

Afterwards Duffy and his sister were at their aunt's house to help on their aunty's farm. Then Duffy went on his online class and started his homework. While Duffy was completing his homework his aunty asked him to drive the tractor.

To finish up Duffy got into an argument with his sister because she ruined his favourite book. Duffy fell into a hole and found his aunty's lost chicken. He also found some Moa bones and became famous. In the end Duffy got out of the hole and he forgave his sister. He also got a new ipad.

I enjoyed the show because it showed teamwork and forgiveness.

Party Popper

My group, Applemelon and I  created party poppers of the same design.

First we drew the design. The design was a Master Ball from Pokemon. We stuck the design on the cup.

Next we added a hole to the bottom of the cup, so the rubber band can go through. We also added the striker which was a nut.

To finish up we added the filling in the cup. There were 5 glitter stickers each and 5 small pom poms each. We tested how good the filling came out from the cup and how good the striker.

The experience was amazing because it helped me to work as a group better. The party popper worked as planned.

Party Popper Prototype

My company, Applemelon made a prototype for a party popper.

In the beginning, we discussed the different parts of the party popper. For example we used long rubber band instead of the thick rubber band. We figured out that the long rubber band has more power than the thick rubber band.

Next we made the prototype and tested the prototype. We made a lot of changes such as the filling, rubberband, and the cup.

To finish up we thought about what we needed to change. For example, at first we chose the confetti for our filling, but we figured out that the confetti was too hard to pick up.

I enjoyed this activity because I learned the difference between modeling and prototyping.

Ll: to make a prototype for testing.

Temperature, Length and Capacity

 I measured temperature and capacity.

I first I filled up the cylinders with water.  Then I did my measurements on capacity using 2 large and 2 small measuring cylinders. My measurements were 140ml, 80ml, 8ml, and 14ml

After that I used thermometers to measure the temperatures. I filled up 2 lunch boxes hot and cold and measured the temperature. My Tempertures were 12°C and 30°C

I found this activity hard because I couldn't read the measurements well.

Maori Revising

We revised all the things we learnt during the past term.

First we played a game were we had to try and memorise the cards. We also had to say the words that matched the picture on the card.

Then I answered some questions in Maori. I used the Maori dictionary to help me. One of the questions were: ko wai to hoa? Which means who is your friend.

This task was a bit difficult because I had to use the Maori Dictionary.

Balancing with Table Tennis Equtiment

Today we used table tennis equpment to help us with balance.

First Mr Ogilvie tought us how to hold a table tennis bat. We hold it like we are doing a handshake and then we hold the back side like a gun.

Then we were trying to bounce the ball on our table tennis bat by using our forehand as many times as we could I bounced it 61 times then it fell.

Then we bounced the ball again but with our backhand I bounced it 23 times then the ball fell.

Lastly we were playing a game of table tennis the challenger was the one that does the serve. The serve name was drop serve we had to drop the ball and hit it after it bounced.

This was easy because I already know the skills to play table tennis.

Explaination Starter

I wrote 3 different titles and introductions in different categories. There are Basic Fact, Question Hook and Explain Emotion.

Basic Fact is stating a fact that is true. An example is How an Airplane Flies An airplane is an object that flies. An airplane needs lift, drag and thrust in order to fly.

question hook is when you ask the reader something that they don't know.  An example is Airplanes, do you know how it works? They fly by using lift, drag and thrust.

Explain emotion is like trying to get the reader to get an emtional feeling while reading. An example is Airplane Madness
If we don’t have airplanes or helicopters, then we wouldn’t have transport for people who want to travel. Airplanes uses thrust, drag, and lift when they fly.

Skim and Scanning

We used skimming and scanning to help us find information.

First we skimmed for the  six keywords. Skimming is acting the an airplane and reading along the book.

Then we scanned for 4 facts in chronological order. Scanning is like a helicopter and stop to look at that specific paragraph or information that you need.

I enjoyed this activity because using skimming, scanning and chronology helps my  work easier.

Measuring Different Lengths

My group, Mathmaticians and I measured different objects lengths.

First we measured different objects. Then we measured their lengths.

Next we wrote the measurmentof the objects length.

Lastly we took photos of the objects  on the slide.

I found this activity easy because all it was, was measuring objects length.

Maori Names

We learnt the maori alphabet and people's names from maori to english.

First names we learnt are Irihapeti (Elizabeth), Hakopa (Jacob), Kararaina (Caroline), Tarati (Dorothy).

Then we wrote our names in maori my name is Mercy which in maori is Merki.

Lastly we picked 3 names of the maori names and compared it with maori colours.

I thought this activity was hard because I did not know a lot of maori the tools I used was maori dictionary and the maori dictionary didn't have all the names.
